Fireplace Tile
Custom fireplace tile surrounds, hearths and full-height feature walls with carefully planned layouts, proper substrate preparation and clean finish details. BV Construction is based in Auburn, WA and serves homeowners throughout South King County and the Eastside.
A tiled fireplace can range from a simple surround to a full-height feature wall. The quality of the finished installation depends on the surface preparation, layout, edge details and how the tile relates to the fireplace opening, hearth, TV, shelving and the surrounding room.
Tiled surrounds installed around fireplace openings and inserts, with the layout set out around the opening and finished edges detailed where the tile terminates. Tile and surrounding finishes are planned around the fireplace manufacturer's required clearances and project conditions.
Large-format tile lets a feature wall read as one continuous surface, but it requires careful substrate preparation and enough flatness for the tile size and installation system being used. We plan seam placement, use setting methods appropriate to the tile, and detail transitions and exposed edges so the finished surface stays consistent.
Raised or flush tiled hearths, laid out so the joints align with the surround, with finished returns on exposed edges and clean transitions into the surrounding flooring. Hearth and surround are coordinated as one design rather than treated separately.
Fireplace walls that carry tile from the hearth area toward the ceiling, often in large-format porcelain. Where a TV location, floating shelves or recessed areas are part of the design, we plan framing, blocking, substrate and wire routing with you before tile goes up, and coordinate with the appropriate licensed trades for any gas, appliance or electrical connections.
Layout is planned around the fireplace opening, the centerline of the wall, TV and shelving locations, seams, corners, the hearth, the ceiling termination and the exposed tile edges. We review it before installation so seams and cut tiles are placed intentionally within the overall design rather than landing in the most prominent areas.
What the tile is set over matters as much as the tile itself. We evaluate the existing surface, remove finishes that aren't suitable to tile over, check the condition of the backing and framing, and flatten or prepare the surface as the tile and conditions require. Where an existing fireplace surround is being replaced, removal of the old tile and preparation of the underlying surface can be included as part of the new fireplace tile installation.

Backing, framing and surface flatness are addressed as the conditions and tile require, including blocking for shelves or a TV when part of the design.

Layout is set out around the fireplace opening, wall centerline, hearth, ceiling termination and any TV or shelving before tile is set.

Tile is set to the planned layout with edges, corners and transitions detailed where the surface terminates.

Joints are grouted and cleaned, finish details completed, and we walk the finished fireplace with you before calling it done.
